Do you want to know the secret to sales? It’s simple. RELATIONSHIPS. When you are first introduced or first meet someone, do yourself a favor and let them talk about themselves. As much as you’d like to tell them what you do and what you’ve done, they usually do not care. Find out if they have kids, what their favorite salsa is, whether they prefer liquid cheese or shredded cheese.
Spend time with people. Care about them. Sales will come. Focus on learning as much as you can about others and good things will happen, heck, you may even make a friend. I’m sure you remember the old line that people used to tell you, “Treat others as you’d like to be treated.” Well, it’s still true. If you treat others as you’d like to be treated, people will really like you and they will buy from you.
People that listen are unbelievably likable people. People that don’t walk all over others, interrupt during conversations, or spend an entire meeting talking about what they can offer usually come out ahead. If people really care about what you do, they will do their research and they will actually seek you out and they will have a desire to work with you. Imagine having a customer that has a desire to work with you!
I’m going to be writing tips every week for people aspiring to improve. These are not industry related but they will generally have something to do with growing as a person or growing a business. My intention is to help others grow while growing myself. I will also have a book recommendation in each post and this week’s recommendation is “Marketing Rebellion” by Mark Schaefer.
